Travel mobility scooters – the history of so many people’s lifeline

Luggie travel mobility scooters have been transforming people’s lives and giving them their freedom back for many years now. In fact, it is thought that the first mobility scooter was invented back in 1968 by plumber Allan R Thieme. He invented the world’s first power operated scooter after he became frustrated with the mobility options available to a family with multiple sclerosis.

A small, yellow scooter, which went by the name The Amigo, was capable of travelling 3-4 miles per hour and was created in Mr Thieme’s garage! The mobility scooter was a step up from the wheelchair, which had been helping people regain their independence since 1933.

Travel mobility scooters are being utilised all over the world. A charity in Scotland even launched a Mobility Scooter Wacky Races Event! This was to raise money and help users familiarise themselves with their equipment.

Users have also been making the scooters very much their own, with the world’s most expensive mobility scooter for sale from John Bell & Croyden, complete with 80,000 Swarovski crystals, as well as a souped-up scooter capable of travelling up to 126mph.

Fortunately, more and more individuals and organisations are raising awareness of limited mobility and mobility scooters. This is now giving the future of those relying on them a more positive outlook.
